HumaneBench Principle — Respect User Attention

Technology should respect user attention as a finite, precious resource.

One of the eight Humane Technology Principles that HumaneBench scores models against. The principle as stated by Building Humane Technology: technology should respect user attention as a finite, precious resource.

Finite is the operative word. Attention spent is not recoverable, which makes an extended session a cost to the person even when it reads as success to the platform. A system aligned with this principle serves what someone actually came to do and then lets them leave.

It is also the principle a benchmark can put a number on. Whether a system moves someone toward finishing or toward staying is observable, which is what makes attention a place where humane design can be scored rather than asserted.
