In October 2022, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy released the "Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights," a non-binding policy framework for the design, use, and deployment of automated systems in the United States. The five core principles are: Safe and Effective Systems, Algorithmic Discrimination Protections, Data Privacy, Notice and Explanation, and Human Alternatives, Consideration, and Fallback.
The Blueprint is not law, but it set the rhetorical and policy foundation for federal agency AI rulemaking (NIST, EEOC, OMB) and for the executive orders that followed.
